What is a riparian zone?

A riparian zone is the area along the edges of rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies. Creating vegetated riparian zones helps improve terrestrial and aquatic habitat and minimize bank erosion by holding soil in place. They also help trap, store, and filter nutrients from runoff during high-flow events.

Ideally there is as much of a vegetated buffer as possible along a stream, at least 15 feet and up to 100'.
